Assisting the IT Project Board

Better IT Projects

Project Boards and Steering Committees play a crucial role in the success of a project and yet their members are often not sufficiently prepared.

A Project Board or Steering Committee member must be active
IN the project and have a "roll your sleeves up" attitude. Members must have a strong grasp of the project Business Case, the project's risks and issues, and be willing to provide effective and timely responses to Project Manager requests.

This can be a tough call for people who already have "day jobs", and so we provide a service that aims to provide more effective Project Boards and Steering committees.

In effect, we become another resource for the Board, with the extent of participation varying with need.

Example roles and scenarios include:

  • the P.A. - we brief and de-brief members prior to and after Board meetings; Write up minutes; Identify, assign and track Board action items; Prepare members for Gateway reviews; Work with the Project Manager to prepare for Board reviews; Mentor Board members on technical and business issues; Alert members to potential risks etc.

  • De facto member - the Board relies on us to provide objective assessment, comment and recommendations on the project. We develop a close relationship with the Project Manager to understand project issues requiring board repsonses and become pro active. We develop project Health Check assessments for discussion between members.
